ABSTRACT SUBMISSIONS NOW OPEN!

The Students in Health and Medical Research Conference (SHMRC) is an evening research symposium for students of the UWA Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.  In 2009, the SHMRC will be held on September 16th from 6pm at the St John of God Hospital Subiaco Conference Centre.

4th years – have you considered presenting your research project at the SHMRC in 2009 instead of your written journal article as an assessment?  Talk to your supervisor today!
If you are accepted to present at the SHMRC, your supervisor and Dr McKitrick may consider allowing you to use this as your assessment for the year.  This is dependent on your supervisor agreeing to attend and assess you, but is worth considering!

The event brings together clinicians, student researchers and the WA health community for presentation and recognition of the fantastic research being performed by these students.

By submitting an abstract, the SHMRC represents a fantastic opportunity for students potentially present their work at a professional level, and to be recognized for their achievements. Additionally, students presenting at the symposium have the opportunity to win cash prizes and a travel bursary. From the abstracts submitted, 9 students will be selected to give an oral presentation at the symposium.  Any students not selected to give an oral presentation are invited to present a Poster submission at either the Conference, or via the Online Poster Competition.

Need some doctorin' inspiration??

The founder and director of IIMC, paediatrician Dr Sujit Brahmochary, is arranging an Australian tour and will be in Perth for a public talk 7th  July 2009. This will follow him speaking at the Global Health conference in Brisbane on the 2nd July. Dr Sujit is a fantastic speaker and inspirational person, having come from the poor rural areas himself to now run an extremely successful grassroots NGO in that area which is making a real difference. He has worked with Mother Teresa and was in fact inspired by her to start his own mission. He speaks well about work in the developing world including the vital link between health and education, particularly in poor rural areas. IIMC is based on the rural outskirts of Kolkata, India and services the poor in those areas through health clinics, building and running schools, child sponsorship, microcredit programmes and more. Opportunities exist also for Australians to volunteer in India and for students to help out in other ways such as sponsoring a child's education.

He is speaking for free at Mary Lockett at 10am on Tuesday 7th July. Come along for a bit of inspiration to get you through to end of year exams!
